How to Set Up Nintendo Switch: Step-by-Step First-Time Setup Guide

How to Set Up Nintendo Switch: Step-by-Step First-Time Setup Guide

Getting a new Nintendo Switch up and running is a straightforward process, but following the correct setup order can save you time and frustration later. The best approach is to start with the hardware connections, complete the initial on-screen prompts, and then configure your Nintendo Account and preferences. By establishing a fully functional baseline first, you'll have a much easier time troubleshooting any issues that may arise down the road.

This guide covers the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite. Please note that the Nintendo Switch 2 follows a different setup process and uses different hardware, so the steps below apply only to the original Switch family of consoles. As a Switch accessory manufacturer, we also recommend completing the standard setup before changing optional settings. Doing so ensures that if a problem occurs, you'll be working from a known configuration rather than trying to diagnose issues caused by multiple customizations made at the same time.

What Do You Need Before Setup?

Before you begin setup, you’ll need the device itself, the included power adapter, and any accessories required for this model. To use “TV Mode,” you’ll also need a stand and an HDMI cable.

Which Model Are You Setting Up?

Your Switch model determines whether the setup process includes Joy-Con controllers, the dock, and TV mode. The table below lists the specifics for these three models.

Please note that the Switch Lite supports handheld mode only. Therefore, this model is not compatible with docks or HDMI cables.

What Accessories Do You Need?

If you're using handheld mode, all you need is the console and an AC adapter. If you're using TV mode, you'll need a compatible dock, an HAC-002 power adapter, and an HDMI cable. If you have a standard Switch or an OLED Switch, please have a pair of Joy-Con controllers ready before you begin.

Do You Need to Fully Charge First?

The Switch does not need to be fully charged before the initial setup. You can connect the power adapter and configure the console while it’s charging. Nintendo’s official initial setup guide also begins with connecting the power adapter. A full charge is not a prerequisite.

How Do You Connect the Console, Dock, and TV?

First, connect the controller and the power supply, and then use an HDMI cable to connect the base to the TV. Following this order ensures that you can test each connection one by one to verify that everything is working properly.

Attach the Joy-Con Controllers

The Joy-Con controllers attach by sliding each one down the matching side rail until it clicks into place. The left Joy-Con carries the minus button, and the right one carries the plus button. If you find that the Joy-Con controller doesn't slide smoothly when you try to push it firmly, this usually means you're pushing in the wrong direction. Therefore, please check the direction before pushing firmly.

Connect the Dock to Your TV

Before placing the console in the dock, you’ll need to connect the power cord and HDMI cable. Please follow these 7 steps:

  1. Open the rear dock cover.

  2. Connect the HAC-002 adapter to the AC ADAPTER port.

  3. Connect an HDMI cable to HDMI OUT.

  4. Connect the other end to your TV.

  5. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet.

  6. Select the matching HDMI input on your TV.

  7. Place the Switch into the dock.

Can You Set Up Without a TV or Dock?

You can complete the initial setup on a Switch or Switch OLED console using its built-in screen in Handheld Mode. This means you don’t need to connect it to a TV or dock. You can save the dock for later. Switch Lite users should skip all steps involving the dock and TV, as this model does not support TV Mode.

How Do You Complete the On-Screen Setup?

During the initial setup, the system will guide you through the steps for language, region, network, time zone, and user configuration via on-screen prompts. You can complete some of these settings right away, while others can be adjusted later.

Set the Language, Region, and Time Zone

Please follow the on-screen prompts to select your preferred language, region, and local time zone. Please select the region that corresponds to the location where you are using Nintendo services, as your region settings will affect the eShop store page and account-related features. If you plan to import games, our guide on whether the Switch 1 is region locked explains how region choice interacts with game cards and downloads.

Connect to Wi-Fi

Please select your wireless network and enter the password to connect to Wi-Fi. This device supports networks on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. If you'd like to skip this step for now, you can also configure the network after completing the initial setup.

Create a New User or Transfer an Existing One

You can create a new user profile for a new player, or transfer an existing user profile if you want to keep the account and save data. The console can store up to 8 user profiles, and each new user must set a profile picture and nickname. If you already own another Switch console, check the transfer options before creating a duplicate user profile.

Should You Enable Parental Controls?

If your child uses a gaming console frequently, we recommend setting up parental controls as soon as possible. Parental control settings on gaming consoles apply to the entire system, not to individual users. In addition, Nintendo’s mobile app can be used to manage playtime limits. For Switch consoles shared by the whole family, we recommend setting up these limits before letting your child use the console.

How Do You Link a Nintendo Account?

When you need to use eShop, online services, or other account-based features, you can link a Nintendo Account to your Switch user. A Switch user refers to a local player profile, and a Nintendo Account connects that profile to Nintendo’s online services.

What Is the Difference Between a User and an Account?

An account is an online identity used to access the eShop and play online games. Before linking an account, a local user must already exist on the console. However, you can create a local user first without linking an account immediately. Please choose your account carefully, because once you’ve linked a Nintendo Account to a user, you cannot switch it to a different account later.

Link the Account to Your User

Open “System Settings,” select “Users,” highlight the appropriate user, and then select the option to sign in to your Nintendo Account. Sign in with an existing account or create a new one, and carefully review the details before confirming the link. An account is required to use the eShop and certain online services, but a basic Wi-Fi connection does not require an account.

What if the Setup is Not Working?

When troubleshooting setup issues, check the power, display, network, and account settings one by one. Please note that you should not change multiple settings at the same time. Testing connections one at a time will help you identify the problem faster than changing multiple components simultaneously.

Switch Cannot Connect to Wi-Fi

First, verify the network name and password, then move the device closer to the router. This device supports networks on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Before testing again, please restart both the device and the router.

No TV Signal After Docking

If no image appears on the TV when you place the standard Switch or OLED model into the dock, please check the dock’s power supply, the HDMI cable, and the TV’s input source settings. You should also verify that the console is properly seated in the dock.

Be sure to use a compatible power adapter and verify that the TV’s input source setting matches the connected HDMI port. Before attempting any other steps, unplug and replug the cables and reposition the console. Since the Switch Lite does not support TV mode, the steps above do not apply to that model.

Account Linking Gets Stuck

If you’re able to continue with the basic setup, you can skip the Nintendo Account linking step for now. Try linking your account again once you’ve confirmed that your internet connection is stable. The console allows you to create a local user without linking an account right away, which helps distinguish account-related issues from basic setup issues.

When to Add a Case

When setting up your device for the first time, it’s the perfect time to install the protective case. Installing the case early on allows you to check right from the start whether the device fits smoothly into the dock. This helps you avoid discovering compatibility issues weeks later.

We’ve produced protective cases for the standard Switch and Switch OLED that are compatible with the dock. In addition, we offer Switch carrying cases that can hold the console and a variety of accessories. These products are designed to enhance your daily gaming experience.

Before placing an order, please check the current price and make sure to select a case that matches your specific model, as the dimensions of the Switch, OLED, and Lite models vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Nintendo Switch first-time setup take?

Most initial setup processes take 15 to 30 minutes. If a system update is performed, the time required may increase, as the host typically downloads updates when it first connects to the network. Be sure to keep the host plugged in until the update is complete.

Can I skip creating a user during setup?

No. Before accessing the HOME Menu, the console must have at least one local user. You can create a user without linking a Nintendo Account first, and then add more users or link accounts later.

What happens if I choose the wrong region during setup?

The region setting can be changed later in some areas. However, your region selection will affect the eShop store page and account-related features. Changing your region after linking your account may cause issues with your account balance and store access.

Do I need Wi-Fi to finish setting up my Switch?

No, it's not necessary. You can complete the basic setup without Wi-Fi and configure the network connection later. An internet connection is only required when using the eShop, playing online games, or performing system updates.
